Outreach: Der “Traumkindergarten“ einer Hirnforscherin’ [translated as: The “Dream Kindergarten” of a Neuroscientist)

Isabella Sarto-Jackson (KLI Executive Manger and Group Leader for Evolution of Cognition), in conversation with Magdalena Schwarz for Austrian weekly newspaper Die Furche, emphasizes the importance of social interactions and play-based learning in kindergartens, along with the vital role of a loving family for the holistic brain development of young children.

In this exclusive interview, Isabella shares key findings from neuroscience concerning early childhood brain development. As our species raises its offspring cooperatively, over 20 years of research have confirmed the importance of social interactions for the healthy brain development of a child. Isabella highlights the significance of a child’s relationships with people beyond their parents. While in traditional societies this role was fulfilled by grandparents and the extended family, in contemporary settings it is often provided by kindergartens.

Preparing a child to form new bonds with peers and teachers in kindergarten also requires a strong foundation of love and trust in the parent–child relationship. The neurohormone oxytocin, released when emotional bonds are formed, not only fosters attachment but also supports learning. Isabella also discusses the importance of play-based learning in kindergartens, where children are encouraged to make discoveries on their own—triggering the release of dopamine, which promotes intrinsic motivation—rather than relying solely on guided, solution-based instruction.
